preparation

Preparation before the anaesthetic allows the safe and smooth progress of your procedure.  Please follow any instructions you receive closely.

Fasting

It is generally best to keep fasting to a minimum to maintain your body’s normal metabolism and hydration. For a safe anaesthetic:

Stop eating solid food and milk 6 hours before your hospital admission time.

Continue drinking water or clear apple juice up until 2 hours before your hospital admission and then no further drinking or eating until after your operation.

Tablets can be taken at any time before your operation with small sips of water.

YOUR MEDICATION

Blood Pressure and Heart Take your regular tablets before you come into hospital. You may be advised to stop diuretics or other heart tablets.

Blood Thinners Depending on your procedure and reason for taking blood thinners they may need to stop. Your surgeon may advise you, otherwise please contact us for instructions.

Diabetes Do not take any oral diabetic tablets on the day of your operation. If you take insulin you will need a reduced dose on the morning of your operation. Please contact Dr Eichel for your exact dose.

Puffers, Pain killers and Epilepsy Take as usual on the day of your surgery.

Smoking

Smoking increases the risks during an anaesthetic and recovery. You are advised to stop or cut down smoking before your procedure.

If you have any concerns or questions about these instructions please contact us.
